Sand coloured, fake, ultra suede is the best way
to make this part of the costume. It's very easy to sew and is light
weight, which is a major bonus since the rest of the costume is
leather or sheepskin!

The sleeves should be elbow length. Don't
make them too long! The body length should skim your crotch/hips.
The tunic should fit snuggly but not be tight. It should move freely
but don't make it baggy!

I highly recommend a durable (!) snap, velcro
or even a safety pin to hold the top closed. Pin/snap/velcro it
right below where the chest box bolt comes through your
undershirt and the wegith of the resin with make sure your tunic
doesn't flap around too much. (The suede at the bottom of the undershirt
is the backup in case it does open up!)
