My seamstress accomplished this piece by heatpressing the leather
into ridges/pleats and putting some stitches in it, then adding
a lining. It looks AMAZING.
Light to medium weight leather would be best. I used the inside,
suede part as thats how it looked in the pictures i saw. L
eather is cut in a strip the width around your body (a bit extra
if you want to add snaps or velcro), and about 3x the desired height.
(depends on body proportions). a lining piece of a light weight
material is cut the same length, but the desired (finished) height.
Leather is marked into 1/4" stripes across all the way up
the leather.
like this
| | | | | | |
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 & so on...
Fold #2 to #4, so the outermost part is on line #3 & top stitch
with 1/4" seam allowance. do the same to connect #5 & #7.
continue in this pattern until the whole piece of leather is done.
The leather should look scalloped when done sewing. Iron on medium
to high temperature so all the ridges go in the same direction (downwards).
stretch vertically to make sure it is flat and the desired height.
Sew leather to lining, right sides together, leaving a small gap
in the sewing so it can be turned right side out. clip corners.
Turn right side out and topstitch around edge to hold flat. now
is the time to add your closure method: grommets & lacing, velcro
or snaps.

She put grommets in the back so it laces up and that
also looks AMAZING but it's soooo impractical. Velcro or a zipper
would have been better but this one looks like actual space gear
;)

Some people use ropes or twisted strips of leather bound together
to get this piece done, others uses some padded material and just
sew in the "ditches". I don't know what is correct but
I know that I love how mine looks.
